| Absinthe Bistrot Saucers |
We have a fine selection of porcelain bistrot saucers available, some priced-marked.
Found in every Belle Epoque bar and bistrot, these served both to hold the glass,
and to keep a running tally of the bill - as each glass was finished, its saucer was
stacked on the table. Differently coloured rims indicated differently priced drinks. A
similar system is used in some sushi restaurants today!
The saucers are hard to date precisely, because they remained unchanged for
decades. But we do not sell post-war saucers - everything we offer dates from
between around 1880 and the early 1920's. In recent years, as the last old stocks
disappear, they have become increasingly scarce, and the more unusual colours
and designs are now extremely hard to find.
Our stocks of most of these designs are very limited. Please specify when ordering
the specific saucer you want (colour of rim, price marking). As you'll see there are 5
price categories. If we do not have the saucer you've requested in stock, we will
suggest an alternative. All our saucers are in fine original condition, with no chips,
cracks or restoration of any kind.
